We've Moved...

We've moved -----  and running like crazy with a young team with lots of energy-- in fact a Henry  just came through ( a.... Bethany we'll soon be done with walls what we going to do next ?? Philip is trying to catch his breathe - ( Philip what about this -- what about that -- we need this -- we need that)) pant - pant- pant -
Wiztgard's special meal with pig ears

Generator in depot and purring away
I had a good trip to the states and enjoyed seeing everyone but it went fast. When Philip picked me up from the airport had been traveling for a day and a half with little sleep-- got a grilled fish lunch then came to our land.. Everything was back fixed like when I left - looked good- Wiztgard fixed us lunch -- SMILE-- special-- pig ears fried-- plantian -- and sauce -- Whew!! --- Left to go to our house at Gantheir and I kept falling asleep -- sleep all night and next morning.  At 10: 00 a.m. I found Philip had locked me in the back -accidentally. My phone had no gourdes or time - but Cheryl had called and she called Philip - who called Pastor Enel - who called his wife and she let me out . I was O.K.  but getting thirsty.. :)  Last Tuesday we moved some things. We stayed at Simeon & Melanie's  Wed. night to help keep boys while they were on an Anniversary trip. Thursday night late we went  to Fond Parsian  to pick up Pat's. We all stayed at Pastor Enel's that night and the rain had cooled the temp. so we had a good night of rest- it had be terrible hot.. Loaded up the truck and we came and unloaded at our new home-- yeah-- Pat started doing some temporary electric to run fans and lights for the team. Cheryl and I cleaned some. Then we drove back to Pastor Enel's for some more American stuff- Madam Ollie thought we had lots of things- we aren't done either -- so far -- no furniture much yet even-- We're so blessed people and we don't even know it most of time -- we need this and we need that.. Philip & Pat went Sat. morning and brought the generator out from CAM --  Cheryl and I was at market so we missed the unloading .. so no pictures. Fans in the bedroom keeping the air moving -- wonderful - bathroom sink in- washer in place - not quite set water to slow so I add like a wringer washer but can wash.  Took Pat's home Sunday morning got a few more things at Gantheir and came back - quick nap and straighten up a bit. Went to Bric for church in evening then to Simeon's to Celebrate Solomon's birthday on the 29th and we celebrated Philip's too. had a good Mocha homemade ice cream...
Picked up the team at 9:45 A.m. , I had been at market with Wiztgard to get things so they could fix us lunch - running late -- got to main road and there was Philip leaving for airport so I left
Wiztgard with the big load.. jumped in the truck to go with Philip to  airport. arrived in parking lot just as the team was coming out. They had drove from Tenn. to  tp Florida. then got on the plane, so we just came to house gave a few instructions and they rested. Now Philip & I are still trying to catch our breathe- the  energy of the youth. Tuesday they set some walls, with high winds and several went with Philip to CAM to pick up the rest of the walls. Boys dug a trench from generator depot to shipping container to run an electrical wire for a security light.    Wednesday  busy setting more walls,  and eating lots. :)
sending up the walls

Young Henry drilling holes for the rebar -hope he don't connect with his feet

One and half walls up on Tuesday
Even the girls are helping great, cooking , cleaning, gardening etc. Henry wondered again what we would do they about have the walls up :) :) There's still quite a bit to do.

Us girls will have to start painting and just paint over the temporary wiring I guess. They want to keep busy , Philip and  I may have to hold some meetings and get some more ideas ;) for jobs. Such a blessing just wanting to come and help us for our own project.  Madam Ollie is cooking about 3 times a week for us. The team wanted lots of Haitian cooking. I went early this morning with Wiztgard to buy supplies.  Boss mark arrived at lunch to look at the walls to start stucco work . Clint Bower & his Haitian friend Edner came along too. Enjoyed a lunch of rice, bean sauce, tomato sauce and goat, with all. Tomorrow morning Judith, who is married to the Team Leader, Mahlon is going to fix us a Bolivia breakfast. she was raised by missionary parents there.  It will be rice , and I'll find the rest out tomorrow. I think she could teach me lots of fun things to make. It is always fun to have different ones come along with new food ideas. Blessings to all , thank you for your prayers and support in many ways - Philip  and I will  soon rest and try to catch our breathe tonight . Maybe we will dream dreams of more jobs- :) - until next time - Love, Bethany

ONE STEP FORWARD---TWO STEPS BACKWARD...........

white cement, powder paint &scoring makes a tile look

almost finished with downstairs floors

crunch.. crunch.. hum.. sounds like the floor is cracking underneath.. the cement was too  dry underneath and we are chipping it up, except one room, and a toilet room...
Yes we're doing OK. just thought we might move in the bottom part of the house, so we wouldn't have to travel so much. The weather has been very warm 92 degrees or so, very humid and having some rains. Philip has been installing the stairsteps and the workers are laying up a block wall at the stairs. We hate to do that but will  give us some  privacy and not so handy for thieves. We know if they are determined, it won't stop them.

laying up the block  wal, willl have a small depot under stairs, the plants in the foreground is OKRA - kalalou in Creole they use in sauce for on rice & beans--not too bad!

We have a team from Tenn. coming the last of June to help put up Styrofoam walls. we hope to move in the bottom so we can get started everyday at a decent hour and us girls can cook & paint downstairs Hope the boys can set the walls and pray the weather is good- close to cyclone season!!! Come on down!

One afternoon I drove Kayla & Amy to downtown Port to a big grocery, before  Kayla finished her term here. This is what the girls chose  to do, it's pretty special when you haven't been to a big store in awhile.  These girls are our upstairs  neighbors. They are from the States & Canada, who help in the Holderman Orphanage. Well, it took us 3 hours to go approx. 20 mile, then it decided to downpour when we were  getting close to the grocery. I guess Haitians stop driving when its downpouring. We was on a steep incline and to the right us we had a flowing, muddy, trashy river. Kayla thought inner-tubing would be a blast ( won't try to think of the color of the river.) All the cars preceded to get in our left lane and we just set for awhile. we finally got to the grocery and shopped for awhile, loaded up and drove down the street to eat. (Philip called us periodically to see if we was OK) We started home in the dark and at two of the intersections the water was very deep and it must've just down-poured again . Philip said our little car was gas and could stall if the water got to deep, so he was glad I didn't try the river on the incline to get by all the cars . Yes, the Lord was watching over us we arrived back home at 9:30 and it only took 1 hour to get back. Thank you Jezi!!

Hard to see but it was quite the river coming down the mountain and the people still out in the storm and on Moto's
Enjoyed Saturday at International Faith Missions, where Aaron & Wendy Lavy. They invited a lot of missions for a Bible Study- 1st Chapter of Mark. Had a very inspiring song service led by Tom Mohler. An very good study led by Andy ? an  English teacher, teaching Haitians at the school of the Redeemed, from Goshen ,IN. We then enjoyed a fellowship meal together. Different missions host this Bible Study in the spring through the fall. Maybe someday.... we can too.

IFM is by a salt lake and it keeps raising (it doesn't have a outlet)- so they had to move out of these two houses and may have to relocate!!!

Enjoying the spring tree blossoms - Flanbwayan Tree- Beautiful orange blossom

Somedays the sun is just too hot on our heads !!!! Grario & Philip
Love to all and Thank you for your Prayers and Support.. until another time.. Bethany

A GLIMPSE OF OUR DAILY LIVES IN HAITI

Bonjou! How are you? Wanted to share a few days of our lives with you ..................................One Saturday evening we arrived home early and I was thinking- Oh! good a early supper for once and just maybe time to read. Pastor Enel's dump truck is parked out our front door. Two big metal gates were leaning against it, maybe 12'x14', something his son David had welded up. Getting ready to sit down for supper,  around the corner came 8 Haitians and Pastor Enel. They were going to load the big gates onto the dump truck. Of course, there was lots of discussion and hand motions going on. It looked like they were going to just load the gates- no cushioning and not concerned  with curly-q's on top. No big deal, fix it later if something happens to them.  Philip watched awhile and finally decided to go out to help.  Philip was in light nice pants & shirt ! ( They usually grease the metal good, so they don't rust.)  Remember this for all of you who know Philip !  Philip got them to raise the dump truck bed, slide and pull the gate on top. He had a big ratchet strap to hold it in place. Then they had a little trouble understanding that the next gate needed to go on like the first gate.  Little pause in the work as he tried to get this thought across. Finally, they got it loaded, climbed on and took off with Pastor Enel driving. The roads aren't very wide bushes hanging out to grab the gates on side and the top hanging out about 4 ft. on the traffic side-SCARY!  They didn't have far to go and made it OK. Needless to say Philip's pants had changed colors here & there ! We then enjoyed a good supper and evening  too! Just a day in Haiti..........

One day I was sitting with Madam Ollie as she was sorting thru some beans. The toothless neighbor man was there visiting and Creole words were flowing rapidly back and forth. Madam leaned her hair towards me and said something in Creole. I thought she had a bug in her hair, maybe?????  Couldn't  quite figure out what I was suppose to do. :)   Finally the old man ( which is probably our age ) got a hold of one of her braids and pulled out a paper wad. Madam Ollie unfolded it and it was a phone number for the old man. Smile! I don't think I could hold a paper wad in my hair. Just another day in Haiti......                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Took a moto up to see my cousin Cheryl Kaufman for her birthday. Their friend Edmond, took me up and he is a very careful driver, a scary road drops off on one side 300ft. or so and stone wall on other side. You really don't want to meet the big top- tops going to market where the road is narrower. It takes about 45 mins. to get to the stopping point. The road has changed a lot since Hurricane Sandy. Cheryl was there to meet me.We quickly hiked back up the hill to her house because the Principal wanted to celebrate her birthday. Usually, you provide the food for you Fet or Birthday.  Principal Kesnel  had brought cokes & ice. The Principal, teachers, professors, 6th grade students  came in the house with their chairs. The students were anywhere from 13 to 20 years old. The school in the mountain wasn't  there before Heart of Compassion. They prayed, sang some songs and a few stood up a gave a little speech to Cheryl . We sang Happy Birthday, then served the cokes with ice. The ice is very special up there and tastes so good.   Pat rummaged around in the back pantry for some crackers, and a piece of candy, to give out. What a party, soon everyone was gone and all that was left of the evidence was crumbs on the floor. Soon we found ourselves helping serve rice & beans at the school. Lunch was late that day. Pat was fixing up  propane burners for them to use instead of charcoal. The cooks weren't sure about the burners, they thought one pan wasn't close enough to the flame.  So they started one charcoal fire. These are 2 huge pots.  Pat fixed the burner after lunch. They don't have enough spoons & bowls to go around,  so halfway thru dishing up the meal, we had to squat and wash  them in Clorox water. Then we finished serving the rest of the students. They fix lunch 3 times a week. This may be the only food some of the children get. Pat, Cheryl & I enjoyed a good meal in the evening, then retreated to the roof to open her gifts by flashlight. The flying beetles were so bad in the house we decided to escape. They seem  extra bad right now. The next day found us taking a 45 min. hike and being the visiting nurse.  Cheryl helped in a mobile medical clinic over a week ago. Two patients were needed to be checked on. One young boy had a swollen knee, not sure why. Cheryl decided to measure the knee because she wasn't sure it had changed much. She found a string on the ground to measure it. She prayed with him in Creole. His sister had, had a baby a week ago so we got to peek at him. So sweet !  Many women in isolated areas bundle themselves and their babies with many layers of clothes for couple  months and stay in their dark houses.  Now realize the house was cement block, tin roof and open block for a window. The size of it was approx. 6ft. x 10ft. There was a big twin bed and a chair sat in the corner. All necessary items were stored in the rafters, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and comb.etc. In bed lay the little baby with blankets,  a tin can upside down held a candle melted on it and a box of matches. I hope that was on the floor at night. I didn't see any disposable diapers or wipes.   Whew! The next patient was a 56 year old lady with very advanced breast cancer. Cheryl wanted to check her pain level, give her some protein packets and a hygiene kit. The small little lady  was laying very quietly in  bed and  seemed to be having some pain too. Her husband and her 2 sisters came into the little room. Cheryl talked to them and asked how she was doing in  Creole . We sang a song together and Cheryl prayed in Creole. I was impressed. What a blessing the families were to us, they both seem to know about the One who died for all of us!!!!! Cheryl plans to go again next week to check on them. We hiked back, ate some snacks and soon it was time for the moto to come, to take me back down the mountain. I thought Edmond was going to take back another girl with us , but instead a big man climbs behind me  with his big empty gas can and a backpack. As we  came down  the mountain we all kept sliding forward and I think Edmond was running out of  seat room.   Just another day in Haiti........
.When I need a little ice for my cooler/ refrig. I listen for the toot of the ice truck. Its distinctive sound is made with a bicycle  tire pump and  horn. I grab my cooler and run out the door and try to found which street the ice truck is on. The ice is covered in a tarp in the back of a small pickup. The  chunk is 18"x24"x48"approx. You tell them amount of money you'll give and they score you off a chunk of ice  accordingly.  They have big old ice tongs to move the chunk around with . I've seen them drag a chunk through the dirty market, of course you wash off your ice. The water truck, if you need drinking water plays Jingle Bells. The ice horn and Jingle Bells songs, seems to be the universal signal.

Just another day in  Haiti ......                                                                                                                                                                                                           Blessings to all of you for your prayers and your financial support...... We appreciate it and depend on them..... until next time..... we are weak but He is strong.. Love you, Philip & Bethany

Building Progress....

randwi inside of the lower level like a stucco finish

leveling the krepi on the outside of the lower porch

The Creole classes are fini (done). No, we're not fluent yet and still struggling with the smallest words, but maybe gaining slowly. These two older people don't catch it as fast as the young ones do. Stanley our teacher was very patient with us.
Our lower part of our house is getting finished on the inside with the krepi and randwi. Philip is welding the window bars in place and putting in the windows in place. Philip welded the generator trusses, put metal on the roof and welded the big generator door in place. Pastor Enel's son , David is making the doors, bars, stair steps. He's a very good welder, taught by his Dad.Our nephew and niece Tyler and Mandie Hollinger came to see us for 12 days.  What a fun time we had. When they arrived at Port the airport was so busy, so when they stepped outside it was hard to get through the mob.  What a greeting to Haiti!!! Then we climbed into the truck and did the normal crazy driving technique to our land. Whew! I decided I needed to go to market for a few things. Mandie went with me and she quickly was greeted by new smells, lots of trash, and many people offering their wares. What a Quick introduction to Haiti Culture.  I think she wasn't too sure about everything for the first few days, but I believe she'll come back sometime.
On Good Friday , the boys left early to go work at the land.  Mandie and I drove out later in morning.  Our little town of Gantheir, was filling up with people and we kept meeting busloads after busloads of people coming in. I found out there's a hill with crosses and its called Mt. Calvary. Many people come and climb the hill and stop at the cross stations, light candles and pray. Pastor Enel said some will carry 3 rocks one in each hand and one on their head. ?? We climbed it with cousin Pat & Cheryl the other night , good climb and at the top statutes of Jesus and the 2 thieves with rocks laying here and there ?  Not sure of the meaning of it all, but it was a beautiful view.  Good Friday evening we  went to Pat's at Soilette with Stephen, Tyler, and Mandie and enjoyed a Seder meal together.  It was very interesting and we had a wonderful time. Spent the night and in the morning took a hike around the area.  After lunch, some older Haitian children came in the house and we sang awhile before heading down the mountain  Monday found us tile shopping with  Stephen  (Tyler, Mandie and Bethany). Philip would rather stay and work. Went in the first store, nice big show room, but not much tile in stock. The man told Tyler we could get it in 2 months from S.A. :) The next store smaller and had just about everything we needed or had it up at their other store. We ordered it and they said they would have the other tile down from Petionville by 2:00 the next day.
Went to  the beach on Tuesday  with Stephen, Tyler, and  Mandie. Had a good swim and some us got a good burn too. Late afternoon found us at Wahoo Beach for a delicious meal before taking Stephen to Cam. He was leaving to go home the next day. Well, Philip went to pick up the tile and it wasn't all delivered to the lower store on Delma. So Tyler & Philip  waited till they went to get it, not much to do but just hang out.  Just another Haitian experience. Tyler was limited on time to lay tile for us and he also thought it was a day later then it actually was :). He finished 2 shower stalls and 1 bathroom floor. It looks very nice.
Last Sunday after a good church service at BRIC we took a picnic and went to a big dam and Sodo Falls-Simeon Shanksters, Tyler, Mandie, Gario, (a haitian friend)  Philip and I. Tyler & Mandie left on Monday the 8th, we sure enjoyed them and hope they'll come again.

Tile Expert....

Mango ball anyone ?????

Big Dam - Haiti???
Philip keeps very busy keeping everything on the continuing mode, which can be very challenging. The rainy season hasn't started, its late this year some say. Hope we can start on the top story before the rains come. Very windy and DUSTY  lately.  There's a gas shortage right now , and at Christmas it was diesel .... Some villages haven't had street current for several weeks, so this tends to upset people. No different then how people react in the states.  So life continues on doing one day at a time.

Love & Prayers- Philip & Bethany

UP and UP !!!!!

The walls are going up. The plumbing pipes are  in place with a few adjustments here & there. The septic pit was hand dug, poured the floor, laid up the block on the sides, and the top was poured with 2 heavy lids. The generator/ shower room is also getting laid up. The Haitians made a bond beam around the house below the windows for stability. It's amazing how much can happen in a few days. Especially, when we leave for Creole classes and come back 3 hrs. later.
The Creole lessons are very challenging for us. We're picking up a few more words to add to our vocabile. Our teacher Stanley is very patient but does pray that we can learn quicker.
Philip's brother Thomas came down for 10 days. What a blessing! He helped with the block laying and making sure it was kept straight. Philip had to leave  for supplies and he couldn't keep track of everything. Charisier the architect is still doing a good job. He couldn't understand the metal stud walls , Philip wanted to put in, in some parts of the downstairs. That was quite an extended conversation for quite a while throughout the day. Philip thought he finally understood! :) Then we arrived one day and the blocks were being laid up where Philip had showed them it would be metal stud walls. Such is Life! The Cam team stopped in one day and we enjoyed some familiar faces.
We enjoyed a church conference at Bric over Haiti's Mardi Gras. One of our church friends, Simeon & Melanie Shanksters are on the staff at Bric. They invited one of our ministers from IN down to help with the preaching. Also a Bric board member, who is a minister came down to and helped with the preaching. Very good messages were preached. The interpreter Bootler is so fast he about takes the words right out of the minsters mouths.
Our little garden is really struggling. The collard were about ready and the next day they all disappeared / maybe chickens????? We enjoyed one cucumber, the rest are staying the same size and turning yellow. Wrong kind for here ???? Lots of blooms on things and lots of insects eating the plants..
Philip & I grated a fresh coconut sprinkled it with powdered sugar then toasted the coconut. Yum! Great on granola and just good to eat. Enjoying fresh orange, grapefruit and passion fruit juice.
The neighbor girl, Wiztgard has been cooking a lot for us at noon. One day she grabbed the soda bottle of oil and  poured it the pan, here it was the gasoline to start the fire. OOPS! It just went up in a vapor. Thankful it wasn't  a huge fire, she would've went up in flames. Her eyes got huge, she quickly looked out to see if her Mom was watching! :) We've had some good laughs over this, she is so fun. She is 20 years old and going to nursing school. One uniform that gets washed every night.
We got our water tested and it is very safe to drink and very good too. There wasn't many Haitians getting water at first, but now the pump is very busy, the word is out its good water. The neighbors thought we should charge a goud a 5 gallon bucket. That's about 2 1/2 cents. Madam has been collecting the money, she's outside a lot and can see who comes and goes. She has to settle some water debates once in while. I'm glad its her, I don't think they would respect me for charging. Was glad it was all the neighbors idea.  Some were getting paid for hauling water to a building site is one reason they thought we should charge. Also the pumps do break and the money is for the repair work.
The thieves tried to break in Oolies house one night. They pried their back door open, which is their bedroom and started shooting. We don't know if they thought Oolies had money or a key to our container. Needless to say it was a sleepless night for the family. Wiquens the 11 year old was crying the next morning so Philip prayed with him. He spent the night with us that night.  Philip welded more fasteners on their metal door.
Madam Oolie grabbed  a big aloe leave one day, slit it opened and started giving it to her baby chicks. She would pick up the chicks  and hold them and put a little aloe gel in their beaks. She said it was so they didn't go to sleep, meaning die. She also got a chicken feather, washed it and dried it. then she started to twirl it in her ear ? cleaning it or itching a tickle ???? I learn new things all the time.
Enjoyed Stan Boyd, Jim Boyd & Calvin Wolf  for a big weekend. We had a communion service at CAM and they came for that. Jim has cancer and this is something he wanted to do. They helped Philip and just lifted our spirits up.  Thank you again for your encouragement!
One day we walked  out of Creole class and there stood our daughter Ashley. Our mouths dropped open and we couldn't believe it. WHAT A SPECIAL SURPRISE!!! Jared, our son was to be there too, but had had an accident the week before. So Sorry! He was on a crane job and a 2000lb beam fell on his left foot. I think it will be ok but the surgeon, did have to amputate the 2nd and 3rd toe ( next to the big toe) to the first joint. The big toe was so crushed they couldn't pin it. Hoping to save all of them. He has to be careful for 6 weeks. Back to Ashley we enjoyed her for 5 days and she helped me get organized for several families that were arriving in a few days to help Philip. I still can't believe she was here, it was very special. Thank all of you and especially Daddy Jack for  taking care of the children.  We decided to take off Creole lessons for a week. So busy couldn't even study.
tieing the rebar on top floor
the jacks and boards on the bottom floor
A Cement Bucket Brigade

On top Jason & Ethan troweling

Cement Buckets the workers brought to the job !!!
The lunch being prepared
Well our company arrived. Stephen Rapp, Ethan & Lynnae Wagoner, Jason, Janelle, Lexi & Kaelynn Miller, Corrie Miller, and Tyler Flory extended his ticket as long as he could. Clint, Brenda & Ava Bower came on Thurs. & Friday too.  Philip told Charisier 2 weeks ago, that  we needed to have the top floor ready to pour by last Monday. No problem he said and thought he understood how soon that would be. Well Charisier said about Wed. Philip problems I don't think we'll be ready till next week..... hum...Philip said that's what the boys came for and they leave on Saturday. Lo and behold it happened Wed. the stilts and boards went up,Thurs. rebar finished and ready to pour on Friday. The Hatians found out the blans could tie rebar etc. Philip said the rebar is so sturdy and over the top maybe we didn't need to pour a slab after all. SMILE! Amazing how quick things happened. Our neighbor Alexus had been shopping for food for Friday lunch. The custom is you feed all the workers like we would at home. They said plan to feed about 50 but we probably fed 40. I went to Bric and borrowed 3 big 25 qt. pans. Madam Oolie was fixing the food.  Well, Friday arrived !! Breakfast happened  here at 4;00 a.m. The boys all left. I loaded up a few things and left at 8:00 and Brenda brought the girls around 9:30. WOW! Our house looked like an ant hill. The cement mixer was humming and a cement bucket brigade was going up on the top. Men stand on a ladder and hoist buckets up one after another as fast as they can to the top. They slide 2 buckets at a time down a rope to refill. Someone was running back and forth to Madam's to keep her posted on the lunch schedule. She had several helpers, Madam Charisier, Madam Vince. Two big pans outside full of rice & beans being cooked.  I set up my table to cut on, of course only me using it and the ladies watching me do my thing. We did use it when we filled up Styrofoam trays with the lunch. They finished pouring at 11:00  and Stephen, Jason & Ethan finished troweling at 3:00 p.m. It was very exciting! Thank You Jesus and everyone, what a big support group we have.  Madam OOlie was very tired, I don't know what time she was up. We all went to CAM at Keith Brubakers for supper. Ethan's , Jason's fly home on Sat. so they spent the night at Cam  and Clayton Brubaker will take them to the airport . Stephen spent the night at CAM and will help us for awhile and hang out in Haiti. Clint's and us came back to our abode for the night. Brenda stayed here today and Clint ran up to Soliettle to check on his new goat pen. So we are here by our selves tonight what a change. We've had a busy month of company, what a blessing, everyone has been. Thank you again for your prayers and support, - until then, Bethany
